Separation Difficulties

It is sad how separation from family during times of war is hard on a lot of characters in the book. Phillips, for instance, struggles to deal with his long distance relationship. Cecy and Phillips had plans to get married. While training for the war, however, Phillip "drifted into a troubled dream. In it, he came home from the war only to find the Cecy had given up" (Hillenbrand 68). Louie also struggles with being apart from his family. Louie "just missed Pete" (Hillenbrand 69). Pete was a major part of Louie's life in the beginning of the book, especially his running career. Now Louie rarely sees his brother who he used to see daily. It must be difficult for Louie and Pete to deal with separation emotions when they need to be focused on the war and protecting their own lives.

  1. This was also something that stood out to me. The separation between families is something that I don't think I could ever endure, at least not to the extremity that they must endure in the book. But I was surprised by how much communication Phillip did actually have with his girlfriend and how he was allowed to tell her where he was going to be so they could meet up when he wasn't training.

  2. I think the separation between them probably felt similar to a family or friend that moved away. They were still able to communicate with each other, although they didn't know when they would be home. I think it must have been harder for the men later on the in book when they know their families were informed that they were missing, and therefore probably dead. The book says that the families are informed only by a letter saying their loved one is missing. The men know their families are being informed of this and can imagine what they are feeling, although they have no way to contact them. I can't imagine being a family member and receiving a letter of saying they were missing. I feel like that could have been approached in a better way that didn't cause the family so much pain.
