Eye Opening?

Is it just me or do any of you find this story eye opening? I feel like we don't totally understand how fortunate we actually are. We are so wrapped up in our problems that we sometimes forget that bigger picture. Louie's story is one of those "never forget" ones, for me anyways. I love the book because it also shows anything is possible. I think the aspect of mental toughness is something we should take away from this book as it will get you a little farther in life. No matter what gets in your path, you have that mentality like "I'm coming out on top." Well, it is definitely something I will try doing more of. I was just wondering if any of you felt something similar to this?

  1. The theme of this book can easily relate to our lives. We all have problems and obstacles we have to work around. Even though the problems in the book are a lot more life-threatening, the fortitude of all the characters sets an example of how we can deal with our own problems. Phil and Louie remain strong throughout their whole journey. They never give up no matter how difficult the circumstances and conditions they are living in get. It is definitely an eye opening book. It allows us to put into perspective the difficulty of others' lives versus our own. My problems are not nearly as severe as the ones Louie, Phil, and all other people fighting for their life are faced with. It should make people our age believe that they can get over my problems if Louie and Phil were able to overcome theirs.

  2. I agree with Lauren that the theme of the book is connectable. The author makes you feel like you are apart of Louie's story and routing for him as he continues his journey. Obviously, what Louie went through is incredible and unimaginable but it does make me think about how I could push myself harder and work through more things I typically wouldnt because of strenght these men had. I think more high school kids should read this book and maybe even make it required for the summer or something because it has many different life lessons and it definitely puts life into perspective.

  3. I also agree that it is totally connectable. Not to reiterate what Lauren and Claire already said but I agree that although the situations are different we all have things we have to over come and work around just as Louie did, however; we also need to realize that we are very fortunate that our circumstances are no where near as severe as Louie's were. We should be grateful that people like Louie have made a safer place for us to live in. As well as we should be thankful that people like Louie who now choose to sacrifice their lives to make our world a better place ( since we no longer have a draft, it is voluntarily unlike in Louie's day) have willingly given up their times and possibly their lives to make sure that we have a safe environment to continue our lives in and for that every single person who has gotten the chance to live and grow up in a safe environment should be thankful because without people like Louie or the soldiers who serve today we may not be able to live in a safe environment. Its the little things that matter. Appreciate everything. This book really makes you appreciate all the little things and see the bigger picture. I like how Claire put it, this book puts life into perspective.
